Maturity or Old Age

by. Hilda Guerra

With regards to life and how we develop in it, there is an element which marks a difference: maturity.

What is maturity, when is it obtained and what is it for?

Psychologically emotional maturity is obtained when behaviour and thoughts of a person about themselves and their surroundings place them far from the attitudes of child-like behaviours.

Ways in which we can measure our maturity and the maturity of the people we know:

  • Accept criticism, analyses and studies them.
  • Knows how to control their bad temper
  • Accepts the consequences for their actions without justifications or excuses
  • Establishes that nothing is black or white, there is always a middle ground
  • Has overcome the phase of envy and jealousy for others.

Having a mature attitude to life, will help us enjoy it and act with conscience and responsibility.

Maturity is not a synonym of age, a lot of people with experience, that find themselves in an unfavourable situation, do not face it. On the other hand there are young adolescents, who take the reins and control of their life.

One of the clearest ways of measuring maturity is in failure. A person who is mature and aware, does not despair, they use all the tools they have at their disposal to succeed, with a positive attitude, cheerful, they do not give up, or go into a confort zone.

Old age as a stage of full maturity

This is the last stage of life, it comes after maturity and starts when a person is 60 or 65 years old. It is the last stage of human development, where changes occur in a gradual, slow and progressive way.

Physical, psychological emotional and social Changes

A person who reaches this age, is the product of experiences accumulated with the years, who teaches everyone else their knowledge, living memory of social groups. Older adults have gone through life, learning through individual, group and social experiences. They are a cumulative of options taken in different stages of growth. Their results are emotional, psychological and social wisdom knowledge.

A road to enjoying, sharing and living fully

To live consciously and fully, 22 years ago I reached out to Hands Without Border, an international organisation that promotes knowing yourself, solidarity and service. I have experienced in this stage of my life a positive change to start a new life.

Hands Without Borders through its philosophy helped me think not only of myself, nor to wait for retirement to do an act of love, when the planet needs us so much.

I found happiness in helping with my hands and sharing a technique, so that many people could also benefit. Now my realisation as a social subject lies in this practice, and in something that its founder La Jardinera, always says: “What is not shared, is lost”.
