How to Prepare for a New Year

by. Hilda Guerra

When we are about to start a new year, most of us start to ask ourselves: How will we prepare?...

It is time to Thank the past and Welcome the new year!

Almost everyone has the tendency of associating the arrival of a new year, with the opportunity to try again, wipe the slate clean and the best is yet to come!

Depending on the priorities of each person, the plan will involve steps such as physical training or eating well. For others, the continuation of their studies, or a new position at work, finding an organisation where we can volunteer and help people.

Whatever plan we have to “start the year,” it is up to us to organise ourselves and take responsibility for fulfilling it and welcoming the new year.

Some ways to start a new year to be proud of:

1. Entering a mindset of gratitude

From a psychological and physiological point of view, being grateful is good for your health, this is what the “gratitude” study conducted at the University of California found. It investigated the causes of gratitude, and its effects on human health and well-being. It showed that being grateful for what you have, reduces depression, stress, lowers blood pressure and can even slow the effects of ageing.

2. Commit to being in good physical condition

You don't need to become a category athlete to get up and start moving in this new year. Your goal can be to complete 5 km by the end of 2020. You could start walking the nearest park two, or three times per week. You could also include Tai Chi in your routine. The important thing is that you look for a routine that works for you and that you can maintain and comply with it in the long term.

3. Sleeping well is a priority

It's hard to feel good if you're exhausted. Many scientific investigations prove that "sleeping is fundamental to our overall health." Sleeping well reduces risk factors associated with heart attacks and chronic diseases such as diabetes. It is key to think clearly and maintain an agile mind. If you have difficulty sleeping, meditation can help improve the quality of sleep. www.eumedito.org

4. Find ways to improve the lives of other people

Regardless of the country, when polls asked, what makes a person feel more complete? GIVING is always among the most popular answers. No matter where we live, there are always people, good causes or organisations that can benefit from our time, experience, or resources. Do not wait to retire to experience the beauty of helping.

5. Set your goal to strengthen social relationships

Meeting with family, friends and work groups will make you happier, help you live longer and better. Scientists have discovered that these regular interactions help "relieve harmful levels of stress." Being in contact with another person does not require money or special skills.

As long as we maintain a positive attitude, of respect and understanding for others.

6. Learning is a lifelong habit

Have you wanted to learn to play an instrument since you were a child? Have you always wanted to study a language? Learning is very important, especially as we grow. This is the time to organise your time and start what you have always wanted to learn. This helps us exercise our brain periodically

7. Staying healthy is a priority

We are all busy and a common thing to do is postpone our medical checkups. Now that we start the new year, why not pause and schedule that postponed visit?, and encourage our family and friends to do the same. Good health is the basis for starting all we want to achieve in this new year.

I hope this article is an inspiration to start this new year, the step that personally has given me the greatest realisation is number 4: give and help others! For 23 years I have been a volunteer with Hands Without Borders and with this organisation today I have the honour of being the Ambassador for Peace in El Salvador.

We share with the schools, universities and companies, the “5 minutes I meditate” Campaign. Taking in a practical and simple way the benefits of meditation to the entire planet.
