New Ideas and Our Inner Voice

by. Marcela Carvajal

What are you passionate about? What inspires you? What pushes you to get up every day? Do you feel satisfied with your day when you go to sleep?...

We live in a time where it is easier to let ourselves be carried away by the current, by routine, by laziness, by normality. If you take a few minutes to read this, I'll ask you:

What are you passionate about? What inspires you? What pushes you to get up every day? Do you feel satisfied with your day when you go to sleep?

I think it's normal that at times we find ourselves without an answer to these questions. Whether it's because we haven't found that something or because we've left it behind, and forgetting is very easy. In moments like these when the world is so chaotic, I think what saves us is our heart, if each day we decide to listen to its inner voice. The voice that tells you to get up and give the best you have, at work, in your studies, with your friends, your family, nature, etc.

A friend casually shared a thought with me; integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, also we sleep better when we know we have done our best during the day. Do we act with integrity? It sounds very basic, but I don't think it is. Not if we pay attention to every single one of our actions. I personally am a very anxious person, I didn't know why at first, but I am realising that the more attention and awareness I have with regards to my thoughts and actions, the calmer I get.

So, how do we do it? There is no single recipe for everyone, but I do believe that a basic tool is meditation, it takes 5 minutes. A simple way: eumedito.com. When you feel like it or feel that you need it, not to advertise or following some rule, but because, if only for a few seconds your mind is calm, the world will look different when you open your eyes.

After that, dare to try different things, if possible, several at the same time. We might make a mistake and not like it or we might find something that makes us want to get up every day, to laugh or even to fight in order to save the world. In every corner of the world there is an opportunity to grow.

Some examples from my life: Entering a career that I didn't like, but discovering volunteering in the process. Going to parties more than we can handle, falling into anorexia, anxiety, but finding in La Enseñanza the opportunity to change, a tool that I can always count on for support and the space to share my experience (If it it’s useful, even if it is for one person, it is already worth it). Now, after years, I am working on finishing a career, but with a different perspective: to work alongside young people from vulnerable communities, helping them to reach their potential and doing so looking forward to the future.

To dare to live applies to everything, even if we fall down or make a mistake. I could write all day and all night, hoping that someone will find this useful. This phrase never leaves my mind: "Maybe at some point you felt very lonely, but the loneliness showed you deep down that we are the same".

A final example: I have always wanted to dance, I used to do it when I was little and at school. 10 years later, despite all the excuses I could give myself not to do it, I decided to enter ballet classes, driven by a minimum of illusion and the phrase in mind of "daring to stink at something new that I love", because that's how you start, from the bottom. Now I can say that I am grateful every day for making that decision. A space that fills my heart and a moment in which only music and I exist.

Every day is an opportunity to unlearn and learn, to grow, reinvent and enjoy. We just have to dare and take advantage of the fact that we are alive. Passions are found by living, searching, serving.
